This Dictionary is also known as “ROBERT SCOTT’S GAY SLANG DICTIONARY” and was written by By Robert Owen Scott, Jr.

He ceased work on the dictionary in 2003 and asked other sites to host it to keep it alive. The ODPS is the ideal site to host the dictionary being powered by a powerful and sophisticated, dedicated glossary program. We make no comment on the content of the pages other than to point out some of the language is *highly* sexually explicit and possibly therefore offensive to some people. Please be warned.

(EN) – Know Your Garage Door System: Garage Door Terminology Explained | Upright Door Service

How much do you know about your garage door system?

Did you know, on average, a garage door opens and shuts 1500 times each year? That on average a garage door is raised and lowered approximately 4-6 times a day? That it’s actually the torsion spring which does the heavy lifting of a garage door, and not the opener?Or how about this sobering fact?

If a garage door or operator system is improperly installed or adjusted, it can exert a formidable amount of force when the door closes, and subsequently could cause injury, entrapment, damage or worse. Most of us don’t put much thought into the mechanics and individual parts that make it possible for the garage door to open and close at our bidding. However, we might find ourselves suddenly interested in knowing a little more about the door system if it stopped working and needed to be repaired!

(EN) (PDF) – Descriptive Terminology for Works of Art on Paper | Philadelphia Museum of Art

Guidelines for the accurate and consistent description of the materials and techniques of drawings, prints, and collages

BY NANCY ASH, SCOTT HOMOLKA, AND STEPHANIE LUSSIER WITH REBECCA POLLAK AND ELIZA SPAULDING EDITED BY RENÉE WOLCOTT

Descriptive Terminology for Works of Art on Paper is intended to address the need for more accurate and consistent documentation of the materials and techniques used to create works of art on paper. This is challenging work, and to date there has been no detailed guide for handling it. The guidelines presented here are designed to provide conservators, curators, registrars, catalogers and others charged with describing art on paper with a step-by-step approach for describing all aspects of the manufacture of these works. The project was prompted by several recurring problems: 1) how to effectively and consistently describe and communicate the materials used in works of art to other museum professionals and to the public, 2) how to facilitate the recording and subsequent use of materials information in museum collections information systems, and 3) how to refine descriptive language to contribute most effectively to the educational and visual experiences of the museum visitor. While these guidelines are primarily addressed to conservators and curators, they are intended to assist all professionals working in this subject area. One intended result is more accurate, and hence more meaningful, material descriptions through the use of consistent terminology, regardless of who generates and records the information. Conservators, curators, registrars, catalogers, and other users will bring different levels of knowledge and connoisseurship to the task. Therefore, an additional goal is to educate those with less experience, or perhaps with less direct access to the physical works of art, in how to …

(IT) (PDF) – Applicazione del Metodo degli Elementi Distinti alla dinamica di mezzi discontinui | M. Barbero, G. Barla, G.V. Demarie

(EN) (PDF) – Glossary of The Internet Governance Terms (IGG) | UNESCO and INFOTERM

Intergovernmental organizations such as United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and global organizations such as The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), in addition to regional organizations, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and others have recently highlighted the indispensable role of languages in building inclusive Knowledge Societies. Each language offers a unique testimony of its civilization’s cultural genius and contributes to the world’s heritage. Language plays a crucial role in building intercultural dialogue, reconciliation and peace in the world. Empirical evidence has shown that people whose mother tongues have not benefited from coordinated language policies and supportive tools, particularly with regard to terminology, tend to be increasingly disadvantaged in today’s information society. In many cases, when a language is used only within the family sphere it starts losing its importance within the professional and international community. 1 In its early development, the Internet would often be assessed from a technological perspective. However, during the last decade, other issues, often qualified as “soft”, have emerged focusing on topics such as human rights, democracy, privacy, social equity, inclusion, local content creation, interdependence, and other cultural, educational, economic and political aspects of Internet use. Such discussions have been ongoing since the creation of the Internet Governance Forum (IGF), which resulted from the two World Summits on the Information Society (WSIS in Geneva, 2003, and Tunis, 2005). Today, the international community has several multi-stakeholder mechanisms for the dialogue and implementation of solutions to Internet governance issues. The WSIS events and IGF belong to some of the major ones. To participate in international multi-stakeholder processes, countries and their national representatives need to be equipped also with language tools that facilitate understanding, cooperation and coordination. One of the latter are the rapidly growing multi-stakeholder partnership mechanisms related to the governance of the Internet. Multilingual glossaries can provide instrumental tools that greatly facilitate common understanding, communication and cooperation among various …
