(MULTI) – IATE term of the week: planned obsolescence | TermCoord

Planned-obsolescence-screen-shot-700x740.jpg

Have you ever wondered why that ultra-multifunctional kitchen apparatus of your grandmother is still working, while your brand new blender, toaster and boiler have to be replaced every two years? Or else, why your most modern smartphone started showing bugs before even celebrating its first birthday – coincidentally when the next on the genealogy (or the infamous `plus` upgrade) just starred on the advertisements? What is more, why can´t we even find those magic vintage machines (or some of their pieces) in the market? Our IATE term of the week offers an answer to that: planned obsolescence.

Indeed, technology has not evolved backwards over the last century (after all, grandma´s machines didn´t know much about mobile calls, let alone screen touch, and internet). And yet, despite the seemingly evolution in production and functionality of goods – from clothing to electronics – they also seem to be designed to break. In an era that calls for sustainability, what could possibility explain such …

(MULTI) – IATE Term of the Week: UAV (drone) | TermCoord

iate_screenshot

This week marks the introduction of the first-ever set of EU rules concerning drones. On the 12th of June, the European Parliament brought in new aviation safety rules to provide clear and consistent laws for the use of drones in the European airspace.

drone, also referred to as UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) or unmanned aircraft, is defined as an “aircraft that does not carry a human operator and is capable of flight under remote control or autonomous programming”. According to EP’s press release on the subject, while it was “originally developed for military use”, a UAV is now being applied “for a range of activities from photography and filming to rescue operations, pipeline inspections and …

(MULTI) – IATE term of the week: satellite TermCoord

Iate-term-satellite-2-700x606.jpg

The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) was launched on 18 April on a mission to survey stars and discover thousands of new worlds beyond our solar system. TESS now takes over from Kepler – the previous satellite. This space telescope, equipped with four cameras, will scan almost the entire sky for at least two years, focusing its objectives on the nearest and brightest stars. Thus 85% of the sky will be photographed and analysed. Its goal is to find and identify exoplanets ranging from Earth-sized to gas giants, orbiting a wide range of stellar types and orbital distances. Hundreds of thousands of stars will be scanned, with the hope that many exoplanets will be revealed in our cosmic backyard. The primary goal of the mission is to detect small planets in the solar region, so that detailed accounts of the planets and their atmospheres can be performed.

“The sky will become more beautiful, more impressive. We are thrilled TESS is on its way to help us discover worlds we have yet to imagine, worlds that could possibly be habitable, or harbour life,” notes NASA’s highest scientific administrator, Thomas Zurbuchen. The discoveries of TESS and other missions, he said, will bring us closer to answering the questions we have been asking ourselves for thousands of years: does life exist elsewhere in the Universe? If so, is this life microbial, or more advanced? Once TESS has identified new planets, terrestrial and space telescopes will be able to study them more accurately. Before the Kepler telescope was launched, no one knew if exoplanets were rare or …

(EN) (PDF) – Handbook on security of personal data processing | European Union Agency for Network and Information Security

Snap1

The General Data Protection Regulation (EU) 679/2016 (‘GDPR’) will be, as of 25 May 2018, the main data protection legal framework in EU directly applicable to all Member States, repealing the current Data Protection Directive 95/46/EC. Currently, businesses in the EU have to deal with 28 different data protection laws. This fragmentation is a costly administrative burden that makes it harder for many companies, particularly SMEs, to access new markets. One of the core obligations for all businesses, including SMEs, acting either as data controllers or data processors, in GDPR is that of the security of personal data. In particular, according to GDPR security equally covers confidentiality, integrity and availability and should be considered following a risk-based approach: the higher the risk, the more rigorous the measures that the controller or the processor needs to take (in order to manage the risk). Even if this risk-based approach is not a new concept only a few specific privacy risk assessment frameworks have been presented, focusing principally on the evaluation of risks to personal data and adoption of relevant security measures. On this basis and as part of its continuous support on EU policy implementation, ENISA published in 2016 a set of guidelines for SMEs , acting as data controllers or processors, which aim at helping them assess security risks and accordingly adopt security measures for the protection of personal data. Those guidelines can also be of use in all cases where risk assessment is envisaged under the Regulation (e.g. Data Protection Impact Assessment, personal data breach notification, etc). Within 2017 the Agency continued its activities in the area and focused on providing further guidance on the application of the aforementioned guidelines through specific uses cases. In close collaboration with experts from national Data Protection Authorities, each use case corresponds to a specific personal data processing operation and makes specific assumptions on the data processing environment and overall context of processing. The provided examples however focus only on security measures and do not aim at providing any legal analysis or assessment of compliance with GDPR for the specific data processing operations.

(EN) – Glossary of American terms not widely used in the United Kingdom | Wikipedia

wikipedia1.png

This is a list of American words not widely used in the United Kingdom. In Canada and Australia, some of the American terms listed are widespread; however, in some cases, another usage is preferred.

  • Words with specific American meanings that have different meanings in British English and/or additional meanings common to both dialects (e.g., pantscrib) are to be found at List of words having different meanings in British and American English. When such words are herein used or referenced, they are marked with the flag [DM] (different meaning).
  • Asterisks (*) denote words and meanings having appreciable (that is, not occasional) currency in British English, but nonetheless distinctive of American English for their relatively greater frequency in American speech and writing. Americanisms are increasingly common in British English, and many that were not widely used some decades ago, are now so (e.g., regular in the sense of “regular coffee”).
  • American spelling is consistently used throughout this article, except when explicitly referencing British terms.

(MULTI) – IATE Term of the Week: velvet revolution | TermCoord

Untitled-700x803.jpg

The term Velvet Revolution has most recently been used in connection with the 2018 Armenian revolution, which started as a series of anti-government protests and acts of peaceful civil disobedience from April to May. One of the most crucial figures of the movement, Member of Parliament Nikol Pashinyan, who is currently the prime-minister of Armenia, declared it a “Velvet Revolution”. In the majority of speeches he delivered to address the supporters and the participants of the movement, Pashinyan would combine the phrase “velvet revolution” with other adjectives such as popular, non-violent and peaceful. In some sense, it was as if he made sure that people understood exactly what the word “velvet” stood for in that expression and what meaning it carried in the given context. In addition to this, several international news media outlets were eager to use this term to refer to or describe the events that have been happening in Armenia.

As a matter of fact, there is quite a fascinating history behind the term “velvet revolution” which needs to be …

road5-push2.jpg

It is essential to check your tyre pressure every two weeks when the tyres are cold (i.e. a tyre that has not run for at least two hours or has run for less than 3 km at a reduced speed). Ensure that you make adjustments if you take the pressure after riding, i.e. with “hot” tyres. In this instance, refer to the manufacturer’s recommendations.

  • Never deflate a hot tyre
  • Don’t forget to replace the valve caps after your checks are complete
  • Tyres filled with nitrogen must still be checked regularly
  • Stick to the tyre pressures recommended by the manufacturer

These recommendations are applicable for tyres used on the road. There are additional recommendations for use on the racetrack and more generally for any race.

(EN) – What Is Sexual Harassment? A Glossary of the #MeToo Movement | ELIZABETH KIEFER

metoo-glossary-lede

Whether at work, at school, or in some other setting, chances are at some point in your life you’ve sat through a seminar or training session on sexual harassment and assault. Maybe it was one of those in-depth, eye-opening lectures that reconfigured the way you think about those subjects, maybe it was a bare minimum presentation that only reaffirmed things you already know.
Either way, the #MeToo era has given these training sessions an added urgency, especially when it comes to a full understanding of the movement’s key terms (and how to use them correctly). While the fact that we’re having more transparent, nuanced conversations about assault and abuses of power than ever before in history is inarguably a good thing, it’s also a dialogue that will ultimately prove more productive if we—men and women alike—are all on the same page about what we’re actually talking about. If our shared goal is more open and consistent conversation about #MeToo and all it entails, it’s crucial to get on the same page with terminology.

GDPR-700x891.png

The dozens of emails received recently probably made you aware: on May 25th 2018 the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) takes effect. Here is our Term of the week’s definition: regulation on the protection of natural persons with regard to the processing of personal data and on the free movement of such data. This new EU law regulates what companies can do with our email, full name, address or geolocation data. Actually, GDPR came into force on May 25th 2016, but, as from today, its application is mandatory for any company operating in the EU even if it is not European and/or is based outside this territory. Actually, many companies will apply all changes introduced by the GDPR worldwide.

(TOOL) (PDF) – GDPR Data Protection: How to remove personal data from documents and TMs in memoQ | Kilgray

Snap1.png

This eBook will teach you how you can keep personal data away from your translation memories and your translation projects – using memoQ, of course. You will need these instructions if you, as a translator or a translation company, are based in the European Union, or you work for clients in the European Union.

Why is that? One of the many headaches caused by GDPR is that most translators and translation companies become official data processors for their clients – by simply taking on documents that contain personal data. Even the makers of GDPR agree that personal data are best protected if they are not collected, stored, or processed at all. (To learn more about GDPR, see this recent blog post).

The eBook will show you three methods to get rid of personal data: Marking up or removing personal data before importing a document in memoQ; marking up and masking personal data in memoQ; removing personal data from translation memories. Fair warning: none of these are very easy, but all of them are doable. The eBook will also tell you why.
