(EN) (PDF) – A glossary of terms for navigating the field of social network analysis | Penelope Hawe, Cynthia Webster, Alan Shiell

Snap1

Social network analysis is the study of social structure. This glossary introduces basic concepts in social network analysis. It is designed to help researchers to be more discriminating in their thinking and choice of methods.

“Network” is an increasingly popular word in health research and health services delivery. The word is often used synonymously for “partnership”, “collaboration”, “alliance”, or even “group”. But other times, it is used with more specific intention to describe the relationships that exist between groups of individuals or agencies, and the resources to which membership of such groups facilitates access. These relationships can be investigated empirically. The role of one’s personal social networks in the development of morbidity and mortality is a well established field of inquiry in social epidemiology. Networks and network resources are also an important component of the growing literature on social capital. Network analysis is becoming popular in infectious disease epidemiology, especially HIV. There is also a strong tradition of using inter-organisational network analysis to investigate patterns of healthcare delivery such as referral patterns, service integration, coordination, and collaboration.

Social network analysis is the study of structure. It involves relational datasets. That is, structure is derived from the regularities in the patterning of relationships among social entities, which might be people, groups, or organisations. Social network analysis is quantitative. It has a long history in sociology and mathematics and it is creeping into health research as its analytical methods become more accessible with user friendly software. See Wellman for an overview of the …

(DE) (FR) (EN) (TMX) (TBX) – Terminologie des EU-Datenschutzes | Christopher Köbel

cropped-Logo-Final-Breit_240x120.png

(MULTI) – IATE Term of the Week: border security | TermCoord

Screenshot-border-security.jpg

Europe has been a target of terror attacks repeatedly since the early 2000s. European countries have especially had a difficult struggle during the last four to five years. Fortunately, many of the planned attacks could be prevented by locating and capturing the perpetrators. But how are we able to detect covertly planned attacks before they are executed?

This is largely thanks to the security management and the safety measures taken by the European Union. Several units are involved and put their efforts into securing the EU´s external borders as well as the Schengen area. Police forces and the military are supported by agencies such as Europol and Frontex, which are not only responsible for terrorism prevention but also for fighting organised crime such as human trafficking, or for managing migration more effectively. Despite all security activities, the procedures aim to ensure the privilege of free movement of people inside the Schengen area. This conflict represents a challenge for the border guards, who have no …

The Department of Defense (DoD) performs forensic science in a collaborative environment which necessitates the clear communication of all activities and their results. A critical enabler of communication is the use of a clear, internally consistent vocabulary.

The goal of the Department of Defense Forensics Lexicon is to provide an operational vocabulary to address Forensics. A shared vocabulary enables a common understanding of Forensics, enhances the fidelity and the utility of operational reporting, facilitates structured data sharing, and strengthens the decision making processes across the DoD.

Health impact assessments look at the effect on health of policies implemented outside the healthcare sector. A glossary is provided in the following article.

It has long been recognised that health and its determinants1 are strongly influenced by policies outside the healthcare sector, for example, transport, regeneration projects, and housing. In recent years, several countries have introduced health impact assessment (HIA) to try and ensure that potential effects on health are taken into account. It involves identifying disbenefits and benefits to health, interpreting health risk and potential health gain, and presenting this information to aid decision making.

(EN) – A glossary for evidence based public health | L. Rychetnik, P. Hawe, E. Waters, A. Barratt, M. Frommer

Snap1

This glossary seeks to define and explain some of the main concepts underpinning evidence based public health. It draws on the published literature, experience gained over several years analysis of the topic, and discussions with public health colleagues, including researchers, practitioners, policy makers, and students.

An important aspect of current debate about evidence based public health is that interested parties interpret and apply the terms “evidence” and “evidence based” in different ways. We have sought to illustrate some of this diversity by including terms that are sometimes used to critique evidence based practice. The majority of terms however, are those commonly used within the field; particularly those underpinning the principles and methods of …

(EN) – A glossary for social epidemiology | N. Krieger

Snap1.png

Why “social epidemiology”? Is not all epidemiology, after all, “social” epidemiology? In so far as people are simultaneously social and biological organisms, is any biological process ever expressed devoid of social context?—or any social process ever unmediated by the corporal reality of our profoundly generative and mortal bodies?1 2 Yet, despite the seeming truism that social as well as biological processes inherently shape population health—a truism recognised even in the founding days of epidemiology as a scientific discipline in the early 19th century—not all epidemiology is “social epidemiology”.3 4 Instead, “social epidemiology” (which first attained its name as such in English in 19503 5) is distinguished by its insistence on explicitly investigating social determinants of population distributions of health, disease, and wellbeing, rather than treating such determinants as mere background to biomedical phenomena. Tackling this task requires attention to theories, concepts, and methods conducive to illuminating intimate links between our bodies and the body politic; toward this end, the glossary below provides a selection of critical terms for the field.

(MULTI) – IATE Term of the Week: cultural heritage | TermCoord

cultural-heritage-2.png

By definition, cultural heritage is the legacy of tangible artefacts and intangible attributes of a group or society that are inherited from past generations and preserved for the benefit of future generations.

Cultural heritage is something that we all resonate with, regardless of our background. After all, our cultural heritage shapes our everyday lives, from the buildings that surround us to the food we fill our plates with. It cannot only be found in art, literature or folklore, but in natural landscapes and archaeological sites. Basically, it is a quintessential representation of our own history and identity, and we should seek to preserve it at all costs. That’s why 2018 has been designated as the European Year of Cultural Heritage.

This year, thousands of activities are taking place across the continent at local, regional, national and European levels, with the aim of encouraging the appreciation of Europe’s cultural heritage as a shared resource. From the prehistorical symbolism of Stonehenge to Milan’s magnificent architecture, or traditional Berlin breweries to the renaissance paintings hanging on the Louvre’s walls – Europe’s diversity is as old as its history. Thus, this scheme intends to raise awareness of our shared values and reinforce a sense of belonging to a common European space.

In addition to this wonderful initiative, on the 26 June, the European Parliament held a high-level conference in Brussels entitled, “Cultural heritage in Europe: linking past and future”, which emphasised the significance and diversity of European culture. At the conference, which was opened by EP President Antonio Tajani and EC President Jean-Clause Juncker, political leaders, policy makers, artists from various fields and …
